DEVELOPING TEMPORARY EXHIBITS FOR MILESTONES AND ANNIVERSARIES: CREATING TEMPORARY EXHIBITS FROM COLLECTIONS OF FIRST AND SECOND WORLD WAR ARTIFACTS AND CONFEDERATION

Temporary exhibitions provide are an important part of museum activities. Special events, milestones and anniversaries create temporary exhibition opportunities for museums and their collections. The museum's exhibits provide an important link between the community and its heritage. In the planning and presentation of temporary exhibitions, the museum will strive for accuracy of information, relevance to the community, effective communication, opportunities for learning, and the safe display of artifacts.
This session is intended for those who work in large and small community museums who will be work on exhibit projects. Participants will receive an overview of the processes involved in creating a quality temporary exhibition experience for visitors during 2016 milestone anniversaries. Topics that will be explored:
• temporary exhibit development
• use of electronics and new technologies in exhibits
• funding sources for exhibits
• developing exhibits in house

CARING FOR WARTIME WORKS ON PAPER: THE DIGITIZATION, DISPLAY, STORAGE OF PAPER BASED ARTIFACTS IN MUSEUM WORLD WAR COLLECTIONS

Paper based material is an important part of our cultural history. From letters home from the battle grounds to maps of trenches, the majority of regional museums house archival documents. In our effort to share the history of Canada on the Road to 2017, the care and presentation paper based artifacts is very important.
In this workshop, we will discuss the different types of paper based materials that can be found in your collection. We will also explore proper storage and exhibition conditions and techniques required when making this material accessible to the public. In addition to storage and display, we will review digitization process to guide museums in digitizing their existing collections. These skills will help museums to meet standards around safeguarding of paper based collections, making collections accessible to the public, and ensuring the long-term preservation of material.
