MANL COVID-19 Update: May 22, 2020

on .

Good Morning,

Since we announced that museums in Newfoundland and Labrador can begin to reopen at Alert Level 3 we have had many questions from our members. The Department of Tourism Culture Industry and Innovation’s staff are working to develop guidelines for museums during COVID-19. We have begun to hold weekly meetings with the department to discuss the opening process. MANL is working closely with the department to provide information that will help you with reopening your site. When information becomes available, we will share it with you.

I mentioned last week everyone must adhere to the COVID-19 orders already established by the Chief Medical Office and those forthcoming with the Alert Level 3 announcements. As the museum season gets closer, our members are facing many difficult decisions. While museums are permitted to open at Alert Level 3, I cannot stress enough that there is no requirement to open at Level 3 and each museum will have to decide for themselves if they can open for the 2020 season. Hopefully, we will have more information from government in the coming weeks to help in the decision making.

Last week, MANL, along with the Canadian Museum Association, the Provincial and Territorial Museum Associations and Dr. Vanda Vitali of the CMA wrote Minister Guilbeault about concerns regarding the $53 million museum fund. We have been invited to meet with the minister’s senior staff next Wednesday to discuss our concerns brought forth by our members listed in last week’s message.

Last Friday the provincial government announced the Students Supporting Communities Program. Some of you may be interested in applying.

  • The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, announced $300,000 in funding to launch a new Students Supporting Communities Program.
  • The program provides a $3,500 grant to organizations that enables them to hire students to help seniors and other vulnerable groups facing social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information please follow this link.

Behind the scenes, MANL’s staff are working from our homes keeping our new virtual office open. We will continue to provide updates to our members when new information is available. Our social media feeds are active, and we have been bringing museum information to our followers. We encourage everyone to post on the MANL Facebook page and to share your stories. Please join the page at MANL Membership Facebook Group.

Below you will find a link to previous announcements on MANL's website. Once again, we hope that you are all safe and adhering to the government recommendations at this time. Remember we are here for you during this time, contact us if you have any concerns.

Take Care,

Ken Flynn
