The Newsletter includes notices of professional development opportunities throughout Canada and is distributed in tandem with seminar registration forms and MANL's "Museum Notes."

Museum Resources Award

The Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to sponsor the Museum Resources Award as part of the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Fairs Program, sponsored by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. They have partnered with the Department of Education and School Boards in Newfoundland and Labrador to manage the annual Heritage Fairs program since 1997.

The Museum Resources Award criteria is based on the project demonstrating use of museum resources for research. One prize is awarded per region, with six regions in total. Each prize includes a one-year MANL membership, an award certificate and a cheque for $50.00.

The Heritage Fairs Program started in 1997 as part of a national initiative to bring history to life for students. Directly linked to school curricula, Heritage Fairs allow students to showcase their history and heritage projects, using a variety of media. Once students present their projects at school fairs, outstanding projects are advanced to a regional fair. Regional or provincial fairs are held in every Canadian province and territory each spring. Six regional fairs are held each year throughout the province.

Newfoundland and Labrador students in grades 4 to 12 may be eligible to take part in the Newfoundland and Labrader Heritage Fairs Program. For more information about the NL Heritage Fair Program, please contact:

38th AGM & Conference: October 19-20, 2018

MANL is excited to announce our 38th Annual General Meeting & Conference is happening on October 19-20, 2018 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. We hope to see you there!  The theme for this year's conference is Achieving Museum Excellence.

MANL's 38th AGM & Conference will take place at two locations:

*On October 20, shuttle service to the Holiday Inn will be provided for all guests staying at the Ramada.

Join us as we kick off MANL's 38th Annual Conference at the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Museum, Friday evening, October 19, 2018. Enjoy light refreshments, with updates from our members and of course the chance to chat with other museum enthusiasts.
The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the famed Royal Newfoundland Regiment since its inception to the present day. It is located in the Main Lobby of the Anthony W. Paddon Building, CFS St. John's, 102 The Boulevard (near Quidi Vidi Lake). 
Visitors are welcome to enter the front gate and park in the Building parking lot. Enter the Museum by the front door of the building and check with the commissionaire at the front desk. Visitors must present a government photo ID (eg drivers license).

Hosting Selection Procedure for MANL's Annual Conference / AGM

General

The Board of Directors of MANL has the responsibility to promote, review and select the sites for its Annual General Meeting and Conference. If a suitable application is not received, MANL reserves the right to name a host location for the AGM.

MANL shall advise inviting prospective hosts to apply for future Conference sites.

The board shall review all applications to ensure that the Conference host requirements have been met. The applicant shall then be notified as to whether the request has been accepted as the site.

The Applicant

It is MANL's objective to attract a minimum of 100 delegates.

To ensure that the attendance and quality of the Annual Conference is maintained the following guidelines must be met by the applicant.

 Section A - Call For Proposals: Timelines

The board of Directors of MANL is accepting proposals from interested parties to co-host its Annual General Meeting and Conference for the beginning of October. The deadline for proposals is June 8, 2012. The complete application package (see section B: Proposal Selection) must be received in the MANL office by that date.

Section B - Proposal Selection

The Board of Directors of MANL is responsible for the selection of the community which will co-host the annual conference. The selection will be based upon an application which will include all information as requested in these hosting guidelines.

The application must indicate broad support with a clear indication of the ability and commitment by the interested partner to co-host with MANL. The written proposal should address the following areas:

  • A letter of invitation from the Mayor of the Municipality and/or the President of the partnering organization.
  • A preliminary local arrangements committee with the names of the chair person and other members.
  • A clear indication that all site criteria can be satisfied;
  • A commitment as to the dates of the conference
  • A preliminary budget indicating both the project revenues and expenditures and/or an indication of the level of financial support it can provide;
  • A commitment to develop a comprehensive educational program and entertainment, including keynote speakers, in concert with MANL's AGM Committee.

Section C - Site Criteria

The applicant must have the physical ability to host the convention. Based upon the attendance at previous years' conferences the number of full delegates and guests attending the MANL Conference has been about 90-100. All aspects of the site must accommodate both the partners' attendees as well as the MANL delegates. Therefore the minimum criteria are as follows:


Conference facilities which can accommodate the following:

Lobby and foyer space sufficient for registration activities, Banquet meal and social facilities for the minimum number of delegates, partners, volunteers and guests; Accommodation facilities in proximity to the central site with sufficient rooms for delegates and guests at reasonable rates;

Meeting room space for MANL board meetings and/or convention management; All on-site and off-site facilities must be fully accessible.

 

Section D - Conference Organization

Local Arrangement Committee Structures - It is expected that the partner(s) will include in its proposal the intention to have a well managed Local Arrangements Committee. Conference liaison to the MANL Board will occur formally through MANL's AGM Committee and MANL's Executive Director.

In the event that there is more than one organization identified as a co-host, each partner would indicate its own level of involvement as members of the Local Arrangements Committee.
